In pursuing its mission, the research committee of Sociology of Peace (Peace Studies), a part of the Iranian Sociological Association, seeks to provide profound insights into the society's need for peace through a scientific study of the phenomenon. while contributing to the academic community, the focus of the group includes understanding the root causes of violent social conflicts, as well as the social, cultural, political, and economic policies that may disrupt or strengthen the process of peace making. Peace is a social technology, and peace education is a part of political socialization in order to develop the mutual understanding, promote the skills, attitudes and knowledge conducive to peace, aiming at a safer and better world.

The difference between Sociology of Peace and Peace Movements

There is a major difference between these two concepts. While Peace Movements like local and international communities and non-governmental organizations seek to tackle ongoing violence and help the affected regions resolve or reduce the conflicts, the sociology of peace tries to look into the reasons and the cures in a more scientific and inclusive way. If the former originates from dreams and aspirations, the latter is more rooted in realistic possibilities facilitated by knowledge and sociological tools and scientific

measures.

Perspectives
Security is the root of the idea of peace; A root which is so significant that the contemporary French sociologist Gaston Bouthoul considers the establishment of peace as the biggest necessity of our times. Otherwise, it would not be possible to achieve social happiness and success. In fact, When one wants peace, he or she asks for mental health for himself or herself.

The Sociology of Peace RC hopes to be an initiator of a scientific movement to help strengthen the ideal of peace in both national and international levels by producing more knowledge about it and promoting the culture of peace. This research commitee aims at providing a more comprehensive understanding of the importance of peace through sociological research. Violence is one of the biggest obstacles to democratic consolidation and peace, and that is why the establishment of peace is a necessity for the society, more vital than an ideal. Today, peace seems to have become more and more important than ever because it has been proved that no country can reach its development goals while involved in conflict.

Iran, too, is in need of peace and ignoring this need has been a big threat to the country’s sustainable development for decades. Although peace has got such a pivotal place in development studies, so far it has not received due attention in our academic research. It is the time for promoting knowledge and culture of peace in order to change views and create new structures in favor of peace.

Considering that peace studies are interdisciplinary and enjoys a vast theoretical and conceptual heritage, The committee aims at providing researchers and people interested to the idea of peace with a space for scientific communication and cross- fertilization of ideas. Accordingly hereby sociology of peace RC invites all respected professors, students and graduates of all social sciences, as well as graduates of other related fields who are interested in the subject, to participate in the specializedscientific activities of this research group of the Iranian Sociological Association.

-Scientific cooperation with other RCs of the Iranian Sociological Association, universities, other scientific associations, and interested public or private organizations.
