The Iranian Sociological Association

The Iranian Sociological Association, founded in 1991, is a non-profit organization active in the areas of science, research as well as consulting.

The Association was chosen as an “Outstanding Association” repeatedly by Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.

 

Goals of the Association

  • -          Production and promotion of sociological knowledge
  • -          Compilation and publication of rules and regulations regarding social and methodological norms, as well as scientific ethics for sociologists
  • -          Promotion of value and status of sociology
  • -          Developing scientific commitment and collective identity among sociologists
  • -          Expansion, enhancement and enrichment of relations among scientific communities

 

Policies

  • -          Making sociology applicable by addressing the fundamental social issues and stimulating discussions on them
  • -          Expansion of scientific dialogue with policy makers, planners and administrative institutions
  • -          Provision of scientific research through offering training services to public and private sectors
  • -          Organization of specialized and scientific conferences at the local, national and international levels
  • -          Implementation of supportive and supervisory policies over researchers, research institutions
  • -          Selection and introduction of outstanding sociological works.
  • -          Expansion and reinforcement of norms and principles of doing sociology.
  • -          Development of social research ethics for sociologists

 

Research Groups (RGs):

The Iranian Sociological Association implements its main activities in the field of science and research through the research groups. Currently, the association has 31 active RGs which embrace experts in relevant fields, including: Social Futurology, Social Networks Analysis, , Cultural Studies, Sociology of Emotion, Sociology of Morality, Economic Sociology, sociology of Iran, Sociology of Health and Medicine, Historical Sociology, Interpretative Sociology, Sociology of Development and Social Change, Sociology of Family, , Sociology of Religion, Sociology of Rural and Nomad People, , Research Methods and Methodology, sociology of Poverty, Welfare, and Social Policy, Sociology of Art, , Sociology of Islamic Countries, Sociology of Peace, Sociology of Knowledge, Sociology of Film and Cinema, Sociology of Sport, Urban and Regional Sociology, Sociology of Tourism, Women’s studies, Political Sociology, Sociology of Culture, Social problems and Deviance , Philosophy of Social Science, Social Impact Analysis

 

Provincial offices

In order to expand its activities, the association has established sub-offices in various provinces. At present, except the Central office located in Tehran, the association has 25 provincial offices.

Publications of The Iranian Sociological Association include:

  1. Iranian Journal of Sociology (quarterly)
  2. Journal of Iranian Social Studies (quarterly)
  3. The Association Newsletter (every two months)
  4. And books and articles presented during meetings/conventions

 

Social Ceremonies

One of the activities of the association is the organizing different kinds of gatherings of sociologists including conventions, conferences, and commemoration ceremonies. Date and title of some of these ceremonies are as follows:

  • -Nnational Conferences on Social Pathology of Iranian Society(2000, 2012,2018)
  • - Challenges of social science in Iran (-2002-2006)
  • - Local Science vs. Global Science: commemoration of Prof. Hussein Alatas (2006)
  • - Exploring Theoretical concepts about Iranian society (2008-2013)
  • - Social problems of Southern Zagros Provinces (2009)
  • - Conference on Socio-cultural Research in Iran (2010-2012-2014- 2016)

 

Commemoration ceremonies:

  • Dr. Gholam Abbass Tavasoli (2004)
  • Dr. Gholam Hossein Sedighi (2005),
  • Four outstanding translators in the field of social sciences (2007).

 

International Cooperation

In line with its international activities, the association has been a member of the International Sociological Association (ISA) since 2005 and (the Association of Asian Social Science Research Councils (AASSREC)), and has played an active role in their programs.

 

Membership categories

There are four membership categories: ‘full member’ , ‘affliate member”, “student”, and “honorary” memberships:

Full member: Faculty members of social sciences in universities and national academic institutions, and holders of MA and higher degrees can become full members by providing the names of two other full members as their references.

Affliate members: holders of bachelor degrees in social sciences and holdes of BA degrees in any field with at least five years of work experience in social science- related fields can become affliate members.

-Student members: students of social sciences in their third and fourth year, can become a “student-member”

-Honorary members: Honorary members could be admitted by approval of Committee of Membership on the basis of personal request or appointment of Board of Directors.

Members of the Association receive the journals and the newsletter of the Association for free and are updated about the latest news and activities of the Association by email.
